Battery fires – risks and actions

The cabinet’s automatic door closing system is triggered if a fire starts outside the safety storage cabinet. In contrast to other safety storage cabinets, the BATTERY line has a novel feature: a mechanism which automatically closes and locks the cabinet doors in the event of a fire inside the cabinet. The locking system prevents opening by employees and thus protects against a possible backdraft. Only authorised experts, for example, the fire service, can open the door.

Independently verified safety

  • Explosive combustion of batteries inside the cabinet successfully tested by Fraunhofer ITC.
  • Protection against backdraft and smoke gas successfully demonstrated.
  • 90-minute fire protection from both inside and outside, including extinguishing-agent-free fire containment.
  • Preventive storage location monitoring via sensors and potential-free switching contacts.

Our safety cabinet has been tested and certified by independent third parties. For example, the Fraunhofer ICT Institute tested the BATTERY line in 2019 and confirmed the outstanding protection offered by the DÜPERTHAL cabinet line.

Your safety benefits with DÜPERTHAL

Typ90

Double-tested fire protection over 90 minutes

Confirmed Type 90 classification, i.e. 90 minutes’ fire resistance according to DIN EN 14470-1 or DIN EN 1363-1 – as well as explosive combustion of batteries inside the cabinet, tested by the Fraunhofer Institute.

backdraft protection

Tested backdraft protection (smoke gas explosions)

In the event of a fire inside the cabinet, the doors are closed and locked automatically to prevent a backdraft (smoke gas explosion).

Extinguishing-agent-free

Extinguishing-agent-free fire containment

The fire is prevented from spreading between the storage shelves and adjacent fire compartments by thermally insulated shelves and a design which reduces oxygen levels.

Fire compartments and fire-resistant areas

Conventional storage cabinets do not protect the stored working materials from external thermal influences. In case of fire, this can cause serious injury to employees and damage to property. By contrast, DÜPERTHAL Type 90 safety storage cabinets offer reliable 90-minute fire resistance in compliance with DIN EN 14470-1 or DIN EN 1363-1, and are classed as fire-resistant isolated areas (fire compartments) acc. to TRGS 510.

90 minutes’ reliable fire protection

Our BATTERY line safety storage cabinets are especially designed for the strict requirements concerning the safe storage and charging of lithium-ion batteries – which may catch fire in the event of a malfunction. With its Type 90 classification, and protection from explosive combustion of batteries inside the cabinet certified by the independent Fraunhofer ICT Institute, the BATTERY line provides double fire protection – sufficient time for evacuation and valuable time for fire fighting.

Additional features according to specification sheet VDMA 24994

Our BATTERY line cabinets can be equipped with additional features in accordance with the requirements of the VDMA 24994 specification sheet:

Smoke detector and temperature sensor

To be able to recognisecritical events, we offer a temperature sensor that triggers at temperatures inside the cabinet of over 60°C and switches a potential-free contact. A smoke detector is also positioned inside the cabinet.

Warning system with visual and acoustic signal

Visual and acoustic signal outside the cabinet in the event of critical events such as a rise in temperature or smoke development.

Alarm system door status

The doors of the BATTERY line must always be kept closed when not in use. A door status alarm system is available to inform you when the doors are open.

DC APP ready

The hardware is prepared for online utilisation of the monitoring data in the DÜPERTHAL connect App. In particular, the temperature development can be reliably documented and output visually and as data. Notifications by e-mail and SMS to responsible persons round off the service package.

Type 90 safety storage cabinets – BATTERY line

Backdraft protection

The cabinet’s automatic door closing system is triggered if a fire starts outside the safety storage cabinet. The new feature of the BATTERY line is a mechanism which automatically closes and locks the cabinet doors in the event of a fire inside the cabinet. The locking system prevents opening by employees and thus protects against a possible backdraft. Only authorised experts, e.g. the fire service, can unlock the doors.

Storage in accordance with insurance requirements

Safety cabinets tested in accordance with DIN EN 14470-1 or DIN EN 1363-1 with a fire resistance of 90 minutes (Type 90) are considered storage sections according to TRGS 510. Using the BATTERY line enables you to satisfy the legal requirements – in particular the guidelines for storage stipulated in the GDV information leaflet VdS 3103:2019-06 on accident prevention for lithium-ion batteries, published by the VdS, as well as the FM Global requirements. Further VdS 3103:2019-06 requirements, e.g. for storing lithium batteries categorised as “medium power”, can be fulfilled by combining BATTERY line cabinets with DÜPERTHAL connect 24/7 monitoring. When the backdraft protection system in the cabinet is triggered a signal can, for example, be sent to the fire alarm system via the potential-free contact.

State-of-the-art work safety

As part of a risk assessment, operators are obliged to assess the hazards that could be caused by technical equipment and devices – and to implement state-of-the-art protective measures based on this assessment. The BATTERY line’s additional features for isolating hazards in the event of self-ignition of the batteries guarantee long-term process reliability and can be considered as state of the art for the purposes of your risk assessment.

Real-life experience – early detection

Lithium-ion batteries are an established part of our day-to-day lives and are sufficiently safe technology if manufactured using good production standards, and if they are handled properly. However, due to new findings and advances in development it is essential to continuously review preventive fire and hazard protection measures as part of risk assessments, and to re-assess them where necessary.

Lithium-ion batteries as hazardous goods

Although lithium-ion batteries are very safe in normal operation, a risk can arise, for example, if the substances they contain are released due to thermal loading. The manufacturers’ technical data sheets specify that, for example, corrosive, toxic, carcinogenic and also flammable hazardous substances can escape. Appropriate preventive measures for early detection of damage are an important element in guaranteeing safe workplaces.

Early detection thanks to smart technology

Successful extinguishing depends significantly on the fire service being on the premises at the earliest possible stage of the fire. Therefore, for storage and use of lithium-ion batteries, comprehensive early detection and automatic signalling of thermal events, e.g. fires, are almost indispensable. DÜPERTHAL connect detects thermal developments immediately (24/7), so measures can be initiated.
